The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has decided to host an international invitational football tournament in June this year to mark the Diamond Jubilee – 75 years of the official introduction of football. The decision was taken at the ninth meeting of the FAM Executive Committee held today.
According to FAM, the tournament will be held from June 1 to June 10 at stadiums in Malé, bringing regional teams together for a celebratory competition. As part of the Diamond Jubilee event, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal will be invited to participate. Sri Lankan media have reported that Sri Lanka has already decided to accept the invitation, while responses from the other invited nations are expected soon.
FAM noted that a similar international tournament was previously organized to celebrate 50 years of Dhivehi football. The Golden Jubilee Tournament in 2000 featured Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and regional powerhouse India. That historic final ended in a 1–1 draw at full time, with the title decided on penalties, creating lasting memories for local football fans.
In addition to the Diamond Jubilee international tournament, FAM has also approved the organization of an Under-19 football tournament. CHSE-Malé, CHSE-Huraa, Ahmadiyya International School and Villa International High School will take part, aiming to promote youth development alongside the historic celebrations.
